We are among the very few in the modern world that performed and demonstrated full transition and full flight envelope of tilt-wing aircraft. The behaviour is exactly as we expected: Smooth and stable transition, rapidly decreasing power demand already during transition, and efficient cruise flight. With this efficiency, tilt-wing aircraft are the way to go for electric flight, both in the manned and the unmanned world: Both our products Aero2 and Aero3 support high-standard, high-reliability operations such as Emergency Medical Services, Urban and Regional Air Mobility and Logistics.
Electric propulsion has many benefits. Electric motors offer energy efficiency of 90% compared to 40% of combustion motors. They have fewer parts than conventional motors and therefore need only little maintenance and offer high reliability and safety. Electric powertrains offer more flexibility – due to their comparatively smaller size, electric motors can be positioned directly where power is needed, without the need to install complicated power transmission.
Electric aircraft have many advantages, but there are still limitations. Currently available battery technology does not (yet) provide the energy density necessary for long-range missions. Using a hybrid approach and therefore charging batteries while in flight compensates for this deficit. Additionally, it is especially important not only to take-off, but also to land with full or almost full batteries, as in the eventual case of a go-around the most lift power is needed. The hybrid approach also allows for appropriate reserve flight time and for an efficient load-unload battery management – finally resulting in longer battery life.
Key element of controlling future convertible planes and including them into autonomous drone operations or manned vertical mobility is an integrated and safe software system. Our team is one of very few who can control large scale tilt-wing aircraft throughout the full flight envelope and have telemetry data in real time. We can implement new commands and improved software directly and without any delay. As both our manned and unmanned tilt-wing products are based on the same software core, we can prove its reliability with thousands of real flight hours.
